Anyone can be a good writer if they work for. First, they should know what good writing is. So the question is, what is "good writing"? Everyone has a different definition of what that is to them; to me it is having a work of writing that is well organized and easy to understand. These are a couple of the major qualities that writings that have been published share.
Other people may argue that the only thing you need for "good writing" is a strong purpose for writing what you are writing. Yes, you do need an actual reason for writing; however, that is not the only thing you need. Coming in second to the purpose of the writing, is the organization of it. Having good organization will make it easier to follow along and comprehend. For instance, if someone was writing an argument, they shouldn't be jumping from the introduction to the conclusion, then giving their reasons and examples. That would just end up confusing readers and weakening the argument or purpose of the writing. To make sure that your writing is well organized, you can plan out what you are going to write beforehand instead of jumping right into writing.
Having good organization helps for the writing to be easy to understand. That is another important part of "good writing." Writing that is easy to understand will lessen the chances of readers becoming confused or not being able to comprehend the writing. If the writing is not easy to understand, then it will be harder for the reader to comprehend it. It could also lead to confusion of what the purpose of the writing is. Something that could make the writing hard to understand is the supporting evidence and reasons not being related to each other in any way. Having that happen weakens the purpose or argument of the writing due to lack of real reasons and evidence.
I have mentioned above that the number one element of "good writing" is having a purpose of the writing. Without a purpose, the writing becomes meaningless. Also, not many people want to read something that doesn't have a purpose. Thinking about novels and other books, they all have a purpose for being written, even though it may not seem like it. Honestly, novels are written for people to be able to curl up on the couch with a good book, it creates pleasure for people.
For those that want to improve their writing to become good writers, they should remember to make sure that their writing has a purpose, is well organized, and is easy to understand. Those are all keys to "good writing." That is all based off of the things that I have learned this semester in this expository writing class.
